On Taobao, domestic postage is often free — use it

Item and the free domestic leg

Most Taobao stores ship free within China, so the domestic postage that bites on other platforms is zero here. The item price is closer to the real cost than anywhere else.

Xianyu is the exception — individuals may charge postage. Read it; a 'free item' with 8 yuan of postage isn't free. The total is the only number.

Agent fee as a rate

The agent charges a percentage to buy, QC, and ship. It's legitimate; people forget it and can't reconcile. Know the rate before you cart — and remember Taobao coupons already cut the base.

Because the item base is lower here, the same fee percentage costs you fewer yuan than on a pricier platform. The stack works in your favour.

Freight is the big one

Freight is what the line charges to fly your parcel to your region. It scales with weight and volume. Consolidating multiple Taobao items into one parcel cuts it hard.

Bulky items (puffy jackets, boxes) pay freight on air. Tight packing matters more than on a small-item order.

Declared value and FX

You set a declared value for customs. Too high invites duty; too low invites a hold. Sane and consistent is the move. FX on the declared amount is small but log it for the real total.

Don't treat duty as a surprise. In some regions it's expected; budget a slice so it doesn't sting.

The one-line math

Total = item + domestic (often 0) + agent fee + freight + (duty if any). Run it before checkout. On Taobao the listing price is 80% of the story, not 60%.

Once you do this twice, the surprise disappears and the cheap finds stay cheap.
